Prize Awarded For 2012

Maggie Hensel-Brown, winner of the Brenda Clouten Memorial Prize for young artists
New winner for the Brenda Clouten Art Prize has been awarded for 2012 to local artist Magge Hensel-Brown.

In explaning her work, Maggie Hensel-Brown reflects:

"My sculptures are about introducing one material to another.

I construct my work with attention to scale and centre many pieces around the site they inhabit.  I love to work in large scale installations using man made materials to bring out the pre-existing features of the surroundings.  I sew, weave and wap soft materials into hard, cold structures of steel or stone.  They are raw materials playing dress ups!

Much of my work centres on femininity.  I use ribbons, frills, lipstick as themes or materials in my work.  Combining these feminine signifiers with industrial objects give them a confusing yet steadfast feminine appearance

I work with juxtaposition using subtle elements of one material to enhance nature of another.  Fabric and steel"

The prize for the Brenda Clouten award is an 11 week exhibition at Maitland Region Art Gallery. The prize sponsored by Vicki and Bruce Woods of Bushrangers Bar & Brasserie in Largs.
